Indian cinema wants to rule the global box office with an insanely ambitious project. India stepped on the gas and means business.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, this Asian blockbuster just dropped its first trailer. The highly anticipated Ramayana movie promises a massive scale on the big screen.

Variety reports an astronomical $500 million budget backing this vision. The production adapts a Hindu mythological tale, split into two cinematic parts.

The Story Behind the Indian Epic

The new video shines a spotlight on a rivalry between legendary figures. Ranbir Kapoor takes the crown as Prince Rama. Across the battlefield, Yash suits up in Ravana’s armor.

The demon king acts as the ultimate big bad. He emerges as a threat capable of conquering Earth, the heavens, and the underworld.

The script focuses on Rama’s 14-year exile, fulfilling a promise to his father, King Dasharatha. He lives off the grid in the forests with his wife Sita, played by Sai Pallavi. His brother Lakshmana tags along.

The trio’s peace shatters when our hero rejects Surpanakha, the antagonist Ravana’s sister. This sparks a direct conflict resulting in Sita’s kidnapping, setting off the main plot.

5 Reasons to Lose Your Mind Over the Ramayana Trailer

Blinked during the trailer and missed the craziest details? We have you covered. Here are five reasons this massive production demands your attention right now.

1. Ravana’s Bloody Rise

Classic versions usually focus straight on the hero, but this script flips the game. The trailer shows the exact moment Ravana invades Lanka.

He doesn’t ask for permission. He arrives and loudly declares: “I am your new king.”

The footage delivers Ravana’s furious battle against Kubera’s army before taking the kingdom by brute force. Yash delivers a villain exuding raw power.

2. The Pushpak Vimana Spaceship

Forget those stiff, ancient depictions of flying chariots. The director reimagined the iconic Pushpak Vimana with a heavy sci-fi fantasy vibe.

This new take turns the ship into a giant golden lotus flower. It features mechanical petals spinning around a central core.

The design looks insane. One tense scene follows the camera through the ship’s colossal corridors, showing Sita locked inside a massive interior chamber.

3. The Villain Rivals the Hero

Nitesh Tiwari made a bold narrative call by balancing the scales between light and dark. Ravana gets almost the same screen time as the protagonist Rama.

The villain drives the initial plot pacing with his ambitions, the siege of Lanka, and Sita’s kidnapping.

Rama spends most of his time reacting to the villain’s chaos. The writing sets up a dynamic where both characters carry equal dramatic weight.

4. The Secret Characters

The video played it smart and hid most of the heavy-hitting cast. Characters like Kaikeyi (Lara Dutta) and her advisor Manthara (Sheeba Chaddha) only get blink-and-you-miss-it cameos.

Kaikasi (Shobana) and Vidyutjiva (Vivek Oberoi) also make lightning-fast appearances.

What about the mighty Hanuman, played by Sunny Deol? Nowhere to be found. Fans bet the ape warrior will only show up in the final minutes of part one.

5. The Perfect Hook for Part 2

The first half of the trailer tricks you into thinking you are watching a movie about Ravana’s glory. The final seconds completely pull the rug out from under the audience.

The video cuts to Ranbir Kapoor as Prince Rama, dropping a heavy line to close the footage: “This is the beginning of the era of Ram.”

The editing flips the script brilliantly. Ravana’s entire victory merely served as the spark of fury meant to awaken the hero.

Hollywood Visual Effects and an Oscar-Winning Soundtrack

The production spared no expense on the technical side. Audiences will see thousands of soldiers, divine weapons, and CGI beasts. DNEG and ReDefine handle the special effects.

They are the exact same crew behind massive sci-fi visuals like Dune, Inception, and Interstellar. The filmmakers shot everything in IMAX format to guarantee total immersion.

The sound design also carries serious weight. This project unites two absolute music legends: Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman.

Zimmer built his fame composing themes for The Lion King, Interstellar, and Gladiator. Rahman holds two golden statuettes for Slumdog Millionaire.

When Do Parts 1 and 2 of the Ramayana Movie Hit Theaters?

The wait has an exact end date. Ramayana: Part I hits theaters in November 2026, during the Diwali weekend.

Choosing this holiday holds massive cultural meaning in Asia. The religious festival specifically celebrates Rama’s return to the kingdom of Ayodhya after defeating Ravana.

Eastern pop culture fans will need some patience for the climax. The second part of the story will drop on the big screen only in 2027.
